Paid Parking for Joondalup CBD

The Joondalup Business Association has offered conditional support for the proposed introduction of paid parking in the Joondalup CBD by the City of Joondalup.

JBA President Russell Crook said the CBD is experiencing phenomenal growth as the areas around us reach full development and vehicle parking is now at a premium.

“While paid parking is something we probably didn’t want to see in our City we have grown so much that it has now become necessary to properly manage our resources for the sake of everyone.” Mr Crook said.

“With the infill of vacant blocks ‘unofficial’ long term, off street parking is now diminished and employees and commuters have to seek other areas to park while they attend their workplace, this takes away short term parking for business clients and shoppers.

“The JBA supports this initiative provided that revenue raised will go towards developing further parking infrastructure in particular a central multi – level station that will give convenient access to all areas of the CBD, and provide a long term solution to the parking issues in the area” he said.

“To that end we would need to be assured that the revenue will be directed to a dedicated fund for such facilities as distinct from the Cash in Lieu policy where funds paid by developers in lieu of providing parking spaces were “lost” in Consolidated Revenue.

“While there may be many and varied arguments for and against the introduction of paid parking unfortunately it is a sign of the times and we must move forward for the benefit of everyone,” Mr Crook said.
