MULTI LEVEL CAR PARK A MUST FOR McLARTY AVE

The Joondalup Business Association has expressed concerns about the impacts of paid parking in the Joondalup CBD now that the ticket machines have been installed.

JBA President Russell Crook said that many complaints have been received from businesses in the CBD in relation to long term parking facilities for their employees.

“The City of Joondalup has stated that the purpose of paid parking was to regulate parking in support of local businesses. This is great for the client visits however it has not taken into account the impact on businesses by restrictions on employee parking,” Mr Crook said.

“The main objectives of the JBA are to support the development and sustainability of small business and to create employment, these are considered to be the cornerstones of creating a successful community environment.

“While we understand the aims of the parking strategy it appears that not quite enough thought has gone into considering everyone’s needs, take for instance the resident permit issue,” he said.

“It is imperative that adequate long term parking be made available for business employees without the impost of excessive parking fees. The current structure will cost up to $600 per year in some cases which is a non–recoverable cost for most employees and will eventually be borne by the business owner in increased salaries and in turn increased cost to the consumer,” Mr Crook said.

“The association offered its conditional support for the project on the basis that revenue raised from the paid parking would be quarantined from general revenue and used to construct a central multi-level station thus providing a long term solution.

“It remains the JBA’s position that Council should immediately put in place plans to construct a multi-level station on the McLarty Avenue site.
