BAD SIGN FOR CITY SAYS JBA

The Joondalup Business Association has requested a moratorium on a
Draft Signs Policy which was recently advertised for public comment by the City of Joondalup.

JBA President Russell Crook said that the issue was far too important to be properly analysed, and a submission prepared, in the 35 day period that was nominated.

“While the intent of the draft document with regard to aesthetics and public safety is acknowledged there is wide ranging opinion that it falls well short of any reasonable commercial expectations and requirements,” Mr Crook said.

“The issue of signage has been one of much angst in Joondalup for over a decade with the JBA having been involved in consultation with the City since 2001 in a bid to construct a workable signs policy that suits the needs of all concerned.

“It is the view of many small businesses in the region, and operators in the sign industry, that the current draft document has many anomalies that creates more problems than it provides solutions particularly in the matter of area of application and retrospective action,” he said.

“It is the opinion of the JBA that while a signs policy is warranted there still remains considerable work to be done and that a working group should be formed to produce a policy that will encompass the needs of all parties,” Mr Crook said.
