MULTI - LEVEL SOLUTION TO CBD PARKING WOES

The Joondalup Business Association is confident it has the answer to the current parking woes in the Joondalup CBD with a concept to construct a commercial development that will include a multi-storey car park on the existing McLarty Avenue parking station site currently owned by the City of Joondalup.

JBA President Russell Poliwka said that complaints about the lack of convenient parking in the CBD continue to come in particularly in relation to longer term facilities for employees of businesses in the area.

“The JBA has made it clear in several forums that it supported the City’s paid parking project on the condition that revenue raised would be quarantined from general revenue and used to construct a central multi-level station thus providing a long term solution,” Mr Poliwka said.

“The City confirmed (Community Times, October 2008) that it would use parking revenue to fund a multi-level car park but no time frame has been set for that to happen to date despite a desperate need for parking alternatives to those currently in place,” he said.

“While the City’s position is that short term parking in CBD streets has been freed up by ticket parking, which is great for short customer visits, it does not take into account the impact on businesses of restrictions on employee parking,” Mr Poliwka said.

“The JBA concept provides for a consortium of local business investors to fund the construction of a commercial centre including retail shops, office space and residential apartments attached to a multi-story car park for private and public paid parking.

“It remains the JBA’s position that the City of Joondalup should immediately put in place plans to construct a multi-level station on the McLarty Avenue site, however, the Association will continue to explore the feasibility of the private concept in a bid to create what is an important piece of infrastructure and advance to construction sooner rather than later, it needs to be done now,” Mr Poliwka said.
